Description:
In John Huston’s classic western noir, Humphrey Bogart gives an unforgettable performance as downtrodden, wisecracking Fred C. Dobbs.
Fred and his friend Bob wind up broke in Tampico in 1925 after getting cheated out of their wages from working as roughnecks for an oil driller. They meet grandiloquent old-timer Howard in a flophouse, who fills their heads with tales of the lure and perils of gold prospecting. When they unexpectedly come into some money, they decide to buy some prospecting gear and head for the hills as a trio to try to strike it rich. After long weeks of tramping around and backbreaking labor, they finally hit pay dirt. But that’s just the beginning of their problems. Distrust, paranoia, and violence start to loom over their good fortune and threaten the partnership. As simple as a fable and ruthless as a trap, this is a timeless tale of money, insecurity, guns, and greed, set in the desert hills of old Mexico.
John Huston cast his father Walter as the blustering veteran prospector, a brilliant choice that would echo years later when John Huston played cold-blooded land developer Noah Cross in Chinatown in 1974—both father and son won Oscars for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre in 1948.
