Hip-hop DJs and deep-digging funk fans have long known about the Kashmere Stage Band. In the 1970s, charismatic band leader Conrad “Prof” Johnson took an inner-city Houston high school’s mediocre jazz band and transformed them into a funk powerhouse. The KSB went on to dominate the largely white high school regional band circuit with groovy outfits, hot licks and synchronized moves worthy of the Bar-Kays or the J.B.’s. They even recorded several now-coveted LPs, though pressed in small quantities and rarely heard beyond their hometown. In his documentary Thunder Soul (2010, rated PG), Jamie Foxx narrates the band’s story and puts us in the front row for its 2008 apotheosis, when thirty former band members in their mid-50s got together for the first time in decades to play a tribute concert for their mentor, “Prof” Johnson, then 92 and in poor health. Can the KSB still bring it? The results are heartwarming, surprising and transcendent.
