Description:

In some ways the anti-Rocky, Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (2004, PG-13) is a somberly beautiful boxing film, physically explosive, emotionally nuanced and ultimately tragic. Frankie (Eastwood) is an over-the-hill Los Angeles boxing trainer with a run-down gym, who keeps everyone at arm’s length except for his old friend Eddie (Morgan Freeman). His life is suffused with loneliness; he’s estranged from his family and goes to mass every day. One day a talented amateur from the Ozarks shows up, wanting to train with the best and make it to the top – but Frankie won’t train Maggie (Hillary Swank) because she’s a girl. Eddie starts training her on the side and Frankie eventually decides to take over. With Frankie’s guidance, Maggie quickly rises through the women’s amateur division, earning a reputation for quick knockouts. But her million-dollar title fight in Vegas does not go as planned, and both Maggie and Frankie must face the devastating fallout. Million Dollar Baby won all the big Oscars that year, and deservedly so; Swank’s steely performance is a match for Eastwood’s own.
