James Gray’s The Lost City of Z (2016, PG-13) is a powerful dramatization of the archaeological quest of Colonel Percy Fawcett, based on David Grann’s 2009 book. In the early 1900s Fawcett, a British surveyor, stumbled on a document in the National Library of Brazil describing a lost city discovered by settlers deep in the jungle in 1753, complete with great arches, a temple, statues and hieroglyphs. Combining this with his own research and travels in the Amazon, he decided that a great civilization had once existed there, and became obsessed with finding the ruined city he called “Z”. The outbreak of World War I called him back to the Western Front, but he returned in the 1920s and undertook a self-financed expedition, finally disappearing forever into the jungle with his son and another companion in 1925. Did he find what he was looking for? Though he was dismissed as a crank at the time, recent lidar mappings of the Mato Grosso region in which Fawcett went missing now indicate there may indeed be ancient pyramids and vast causeways hidden deep beneath the greenery.
