Description:

Coco (2017, rated PG) is a funny, emotional and dazzlingly animated tale of family, death, and music in Mexican culture.

Young Miguel yearns to play guitar and sing like his 1940s idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. But his shoemaking family, especially his strict grandmother, has banned music due to the transgressions of a long-dead patriarch, whose face has been cut out of an old family photo. Miguel crafts his own guitar and tends a secret altar to his hero, hoping to triumph in the annual Dia de los Muertos talent show. When his grandmother destroys his guitar, he sneaks into Ernesto’s crypt to borrow his skull-shaped guitar, which transports him to a spookier plane of existence. There he uncovers the long-buried family history, and learns that people die twice; once physically, the second time permanently when their soul fades from the memories of the living.

The pace is rollicking, the tunes are delightful, and it weaves all this lore and melancholy into a sweeping and heartwarming finale.
