Description:

Respect (2021, PG-13) follows three decades in the tumultuous life of Aretha Franklin, the legendary Queen of Soul. Born into the home of the Reverend C.L. Franklin, pastor of Detroit’s biggest gospel church, Aretha and her sisters grow up singing, and it is clear from a young age that Aretha is a musical prodigy. But her path will be troubled. She loses her mother at age 10, suffers abuse and a series of unhappy relationships, raises her children as a single mother, and tries to find a distinctive voice as an R&B singer while campaigning in the high-profile struggles of the civil rights movement. After a meteoric string of hits in the late 1960s and a descent into drinking, she finds her voice again with her classic 1972 gospel album Amazing Grace. In her final decades, she worked to bring her story to the big screen, and after seeing Dreamgirls and the Broadway version of The Color Purple, asked Jennifer Hudson to portray her. The film is dedicated to Franklin, who passed away in 2018.
