The ultimate portrait of the grungy early ‘90s, Reality Bites (1994, PG-13) is seen through the eyes of Lelaina (Winona Ryder) and her camcorder, as she films her fellow Gen X slackers doing the daily grind in Houston after college. Her best friend Troy (Ethan Hawke) is an unemployed musician having an existential crisis, Vicki (Janeane Garofalo) works retail and suffers a string of bad one-night stands, and Sammy (Steve Zahn) is having trouble coming out to his parents. When Lelaina meets earnest yuppie Michael (Ben Stiller), who wants to develop her home videos into a broadcast show for his MTV-like station, she is torn between selling out and her love-hate relationship with Troy. Still relevant thirty years on.
