Description:
An ‘80s rom-com that transcends the genre, Moonstruck (1987, PG) is set against the backdrop of Christmas in New York. Thirtysomething Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher) works as a bookkeeper and lives with her parents in Brooklyn. Her oafish boyfriend Johnny (Danny Aiello) pressures her to accept his marriage proposal, then sends her to invite his estranged younger brother to the wedding. Ronny (Nicolas Cage at his most furiously miserable) owns a bakery, and years ago lost a hand in an accident involving Johnny. With Ronny and Loretta, it’s passion at first sight, which Loretta tries in vain to resist. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance. Will a moonstruck Cher marry boring Johnny or lose herself to wild, tormented Ronny? Playwright John Patrick Shanley won the Oscar for his masterful screenplay.
