Bohemian Rhapsody (2018, PG-13) follows the rise of Freddie Mercury from striving young immigrant to worldwide superstar as the lead singer of the rock band Queen. Parsi-Indian Farrokh Bulsara works as a baggage handler at Heathrow Airport, secretly nursing dreams of fame. He falls in with the members of a pub-rock band, and with his four-octave vocal range and flamboyant showmanship becomes their new lead singer. Rechristening himself Freddie Mercury, he inspires them to tour the country and land a major-label record deal. As Queen, they rule the airwaves with brilliant songs that fuse operatic humor with swaggering hard rock. Drink and drugs beckon, and Freddie’s barely sublimated homosexuality is both their secret weapon and a difficult taboo to navigate. Freddie wants a solo career, but at the peak of the band’s fame, he is diagnosed with AIDS. In the face of this tragic news the band gives their all-time greatest performance onstage at Live Aid in 1985. Rami Malek’s electrifying lead performance won him the Oscar for Best Actor.
