Description:

In 1994, Alvin Straight drove a riding lawn mower 250 miles from Laurens, Iowa to visit his older brother Henry in Blue River, Wisconsin, who had just had a stroke. Alvin was in his mid-70s and unwell, and his vision was too poor for him to drive a car, so he drove his mower, which took him six weeks. David Lynch’s producer Mary Sweeney read about Alvin’s quiet midwestern dedication in the paper and found it inspiring. And that is how, in between two of his freakiest surrealist nightmares, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, David Lynch’s filmography came to include his one and only family-friendly Disney film, The Straight Story (1999, rated G), a sturdy, sensitive telling of Alvin’s journey. The terse Hemingway-esque dialogue contrasts with Lynch’s heavenly widescreen visuals of the Iowa landscape, sumptuously scored by Angelo Badalamenti. After a lifetime of stunt work and minor characters, Richard Farnsworth was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor for his starring role, making him the oldest actor ever nominated; all the more impressive given that he was suffering many of Alvin’s own ailments in real life. The Straight Story is not so far from the brighter moments of Blue Velvet or Twin Peaks, before the noir descends – a deeply American story told with emotional grandeur.
