Description:

Chadwick Boseman embodies the incendiary soul king James Brown as he recalls his life in Get On Up (2014, PG-13). Born into poverty in South Carolina in 1933, Brown survived abandonment and abuse but soon landed in prison, where a chance meeting convinced him that he was meant for life as a performer. He joined a gospel group and played jazz and blues on the ‘chitlin circuit’ while honing his chops and developing a new kind of soul. In the 1960s he exploded into stardom, fronting a precision-tuned funk group with innovative moves and fiery songs that demanded both racial and sexual liberation. Audiences were mesmerized by his onstage daring and drama, and the Black Power movement got an inspiring soundtrack. But offstage Brown could be domineering, self-destructive and financially improvident, alienating his bandmates and complicating his own struggle. Only when he hit rock bottom could he finally see a way forward.
