Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and John Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) team up for In the Heights (2021, rated PG-13) a blockbuster musical about summertime in a vibrant neighborhood at the northern edge of Manhattan. Charismatic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) looks after his aging Cuban neighbor, pines for the gorgeous beautician who styles hair next door, and saves every penny from his daily grind to someday move back to the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile his childhood friend Nina returns home from college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on her education. Love and dreams are in the air, and by summer’s end everyone in the close-knit neighborhood will learn what it means to call this place home. Big songs, fast-paced direction and plenty of heart.
