Poets and zine makers Sofia Aguilar and Paula Macena created Los Angeles: the zine to honor and celebrate the communities affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires. In this zine-making workshop, they’ll bring their experience, artistry, and expertise to help you make your own memoir zine.


A Children's Author's Journey: Navigating the Path from Independent to Big Publishing

Award-winning children’s author Helena Ku Rhee shares her experiences on going from publishing independently to eventually being published with one of the big five publishers. Her books include The Paper Kingdom, Sora's Seashells, and Shoes Off, Please.

Create your own comic strip with Steven Weissman, a cartoonist and illustrator for Fantagraphics Books. He is the author of over ten books and has been a faculty member at the Art Center College of Design since 2006.


The Past, Present and Future of Publishing: Perspectives from the Indie Scene

Time: 2 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
Location: Meeting Room B

A moderated discussion between independent publishing veterans Terri Accomazzo from Angel City Press, Tobi Harper Petrie from Red Hen, and Karen Chan from Gloo Books. Angel City Press has engaged more than 100 Southern California authors and published more than 135 books. Gloo Books is an independent children's publishing company creating books for a more inclusive, just, and compassionate future. Red Hen publishes approximately 25 books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction each year, with over 550 books released to date.

Zine Folding Demonstration With Nova Community Arts

Time: 2 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Zines are a DIY form of rapid publishing that is a great way to share your thoughts, poetry, drawings, comics, or more! In this class, you’ll learn how to fold and assemble several types of zines using various methods, including X-Fold, T-Cut, Snake, and Pamphlet Stitch zines. You will leave with instructions and templates to help you incorporate these techniques into your next zine projects! All supplies are provided. Nova Community Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit art studio that offers arts education and access to materials and equipment in Los Angeles.

Imagination Station: A Young Storytellers Workshop

Come discover your authentic voice and bring your story to life! Jess Doss from Young Storytellers, an arts non-profit that empowers authentic, essential new voices, will lead this dynamic storytelling workshop to help youth ages 8-18 find ways to elevate and share their unique voices.

If you’ve finished writing your book and you’re wondering what to do, we’ve got two experts to shed light on the world of indie publishing, sensitivity reading, editing, marketing, and publicity. Our panelists include Isabel Ngo, a freelance book editor, and Alyssia Gonzalez, the founder of Oso Literary PR, a boutique marketing and publicity agency specializing in fiction and creative nonfiction.

Parking

  • The Los Angeles Public Library does not own or operate public parking facilities in the vicinity of the Central Library. Limited reduced-rate parking is available at the parking garage located at 524 South Flower St., directly underneath Central Library.
  • Parking validation for this parking garage is available at the Information Desk. Parking validation rates of $1, payable at the parking garage only between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Public Transportation

  • Public transportation is highly encouraged. The Metro A (Blue), B (Red), and D (Purple) Lines have stops near Central Library. Most buses that come downtown stop near the Central Library. Check the Metro website for rates, routes, and schedules.

The festival will not be providing food, however there are many food options in Downtown Los Angeles around Central Library.

A library card is not needed to attend the event. If you don’t already have a Los Angeles Public Library card, we encourage you to sign up for one at the Circulation Desk located on the first floor. Library cards are free to residents of California, and the Los Angeles Public Library no longer charges late fines! Parking validation is available at the library's Information Desk (first floor). Patrons can obtain validation upon presenting a valid library card.

Yes, The Library Store will be in the Taper Auditorium Lobby from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., selling select Indie Author and Zine titles. The books will also be available for sale in the Library Store, which is located on the first floor, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
