Description:
The real-life Ed Wood (1994, rated R) is often considered the worst or at least strangest movie director ever—his bizarre no-budget horror films seem like they were improvised on the spot, and are full of glaring errors and prop fails. Which gives them a certain charm for like-minded souls, such as Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, who turn his story into a sweetly inspiring and hilarious portrait of a man with more vision than talent striving to make his mark in 1950s Hollywood.
Ed somehow got a past-his-prime Bela Lugosi to appear in a couple of his films, and Martin Landau gives a standout performance as junkie Bela at the end of his life, still trying to keep the Dracula mystique going in sun-baked L.A.
Wood’s life, loves and secret obsession with wearing women’s clothing are shot in chiaroscuro black and white, capturing the look of an Orson Welles-era RKO picture. One of Tim Burton’s funniest and best.
