Description:
Join Authors Study Club, Inc. for a historic celebration marking 100 years since the founding of America’s first Black labor union. This event includes a special screening of 10,000 Black Men Named George, the inspiring story of A. Philip Randolph and the Pullman porters who organized for justice against great odds.
Acclaimed filmmaker Robert Townsend will be honored with the OASC Hall of Fame "Transformative Torchbearer" Award. A distinguished panel—featuring union leaders, scholars, and descendants of original Brotherhood members—will explore how this groundbreaking 1925 labor movement laid the groundwork for the Black middle class and energized the civil rights movement.
Festivities begin with a dessert reception at 1 p.m. in the Thornton and Children’s Courtyards, followed by the film and panel discussion from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Mark Taper Auditorium. Admission is free, but RSVP is recommended as space is limited. Parking is available for $1.00 with your Library card; if you don't have one, you can sign up for a card at the library. Additional parking options are available for $10.00—see the library website for details.
