Description:

Perhaps the most iconic Hollywood movie of all, one that still resonates in filmmaking, art and literature today. Based on L. Frank Baum’s series of children’s books, The Wizard of Oz (1939, rated G) is the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto, who are swept up in a Kansas tornado and transported to the magical land of Oz. There she befriends the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, and they set off together along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to seek help from the all-powerful Wizard, while trying to evade the Wicked Witch of the West. In the end, clicking her ruby slippers takes Dorothy back home… or was it all a dream? Judy Garland’s performances of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” are of course unforgettable. The moment the screen suddenly transforms from the black & white of Kansas into the glorious Technicolour of Oz is still the ultimate visual metaphor for cinema's promise of escape from dull reality into wondrous fantasy.
