Description:

The hot-pink juggernaut that dominated summer moviegoing in 2023 (along with Oppenheimer), Barbie (PG-13) is both a celebration and a subversion of the world’s most popular and controversial doll. Following a brilliant series of feminist ensemble films from Frances Ha to Little Women, Greta Gerwig got recruited by Margot Robbie to rewrite and direct a big budget toy tie-in that had been in development for decades. Gerwig’s script, co-written with her husband Noah Baumbach, is a hilarious candy-colored musical fantasy that explores the collision of Barbie’s wonderland with the mortality, inequality and pain of the real world. Barbie learns that there is a real world beyond Barbieland and decides to drive there in her pink convertible, with Ken stowing away in the back. When they get there, they learn that reality is harsh, beauty standards are cruel, and boorish patriarchy is the norm (in contrast to Barbieland, where all the Barbies have high-status careers and the Kens play at the beach). They bring their new perspectives back to Barbieland, setting up a showdown between the Kens and the Barbies that forces them to rethink the fundamentals of their society and relationships. Margot Robbie turns a doll that has long been mocked as the shallowest of characters into an inspiring woman determined to struggle, learn and grow.
